Here are some quick ideas I developed from teaching English (ESL).
- Start with a dictionary and a book about grammar (find a highly recommended resource and commit to one before moving on to the next). Read extensively to expose yourself to the language. Absorb information by listening to the language.
- Understand the differences between pronunciation and spelling (it is very difficult to remember all of the exceptions in English because the spelling is so inconsistent with how it sounds-making the dictionary your best friend). Practice with lists of vocabulary words to learn different words and their spellings. Understand articulatory phonetics (specific mouth movements) required for certain speech sounds.
- Engage in one-on-one coaching to receive feedback on your pronunciation. Use tools like ChatGPT and other online resources to get immediate corrections for writing.
- Incorporate enjoyable materials, such as books, TV shows, or skill-building activities, that you would enjoy even outside of language learning. Divide your learning into different categories (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation). Focus on making progress in each category simultaneously, not separately.
- Adjust your learning based on the feedback you receive from native speakers and instructors. Use spaced repetition techniques and review the material you’ve learned regularly to enhance retention. Gradually introduce more complex concepts and exceptions to rules.

Practice ~ On your computer or phone, you can use voice transcription. When you talk into a mic, your speech will automatically be typed, and you can get feedback on which words are clear and which words need some work.
